Debunking Alex Nowrasteh

Just three days after the public assassination of conservative debate king Charlie Kirk, the tasteless lackwit Alex Nowrasteh of CATO proudly debuted his database of politically motivated violence, making much of a supposedly massive gap in fatalities between so-called right wing vs left wing violence.

In the chaotic days that followed, it received massive publicity. A “right wing” think tank conveniently confirming everyone’s priors at the exact moment it was desperately desired.

If you’ve read my previous work, you’ll know I was immediately suspicious. A quick skim for familiar names told me everything- yet another carefully crafted bit of bespoke propaganda.

As is the way with these pieces, a ham-fisted attempt was made to justify the exclusion of a great many acts of violence from the political left, while including many absolute absurdities in the “right wing” column.

I’m not going into the weeds trying to parse Nowrasteh’s supposed methodology, which he fails to adhere to, anyway. It’s sufficient to note that much like Everytown including BB gun incidents as “school shootings,” his criteria do not align with public perception of what constitutes political violence.

There is also the wholly arbitrary decision to begin counting in 1975, a decision likely undertaken to avoid counting the obscene number of attacks by radical leftists in the prior decade, while still including fatalities from the Oklahoma City bombing, without which, the project fails.

So, to simplify, here are the criteria I used: an attack is political if carried out by a person with explicit political motivation, or by a person affiliated with a political cause or organization AND while undertaking activities related to the perpetrator’s beliefs.

A good number of inclusions appear to be similar to the issues with other databases:

-Taking into account common political beliefs of perps in non-political murders

-Counting “hate crime” murders, but only those commited by the “right”

-Counting murders by people with mixed ideologies exclusively as a right wing phenomenon, or deliberately misunderstanding certain movements

-Relying on rumor or innuendo or unverified claims relating to motives

Domestic killings and related attacks by people affiliated with extremist ideology are only listed if the killer had an easily identifiable motive relating to beliefs.

Perpetrators who were acquitted, or institutionalized in lieu of trial are excluded, as they should be.

I am including all acts of political violence by Americans, against Americans, or people residing in the US.

I am including killings by Neonazis, et al, but not gendered hate, as there is no evidence of political belief motive in the latter. (Exceptions for manifestos with explicit politics) Inceldom, likewise.

Unlike Nowrasteh, I am also including anti-white and anti-Jewish killings by black nationalists and adherents of the Nation of Islam, Black Hebrew Israelites, and similar groups with explicitly political, anti-white or antisemitic views.

I reject the bizarre premise that racism in and of itself is a right wing phenomenon, or that groups affiliated with racist black organizations cannot be counted because leftism rejects racism — an absurd and circular argument. Most so-called right wing violence is also repudiated by the mainstream right.

I am not including internecine squabbles, or like-on-like violence, unless committed during an overt political action.

On to the list.

Mistakes

First, let’s adjust some numbers. In addition to sloppy methodology, this list is riddled with simple counting mistakes, all of which predictably accumulate in one direction. These include inflated fatalities, un-indicted perpetrators, double-counting, acquittals etc., which will be detailed below.

Note: this is a project undertaken by one person with a phone. I do not get paid, nor do I have institutional support. I correct mistakes and add things as I uncover them - many cases here have been ignored for decades. Please write if you have corrections or additional material. Unlike Alex, I will correct them.

Misclassified Events

Numerous events are misclassified, either by affiliation of the perpetrators, or by political intent.

Alex has been made aware of his mistakes, but has refused to acknowledge or correct them, other than small concessions.

What follows is a list of errors and omissions in Nowrasteh’s database. There will be a followup as I will be attempting to build a new, more honest database.

Mistakes and omissions

Omission: The Zizian-cult murders of six, including the assassination of Border Patrol Agent David Mailand. Zizians, named by detracors after their leader Ziz Lasota, were a militant vegan transgender “rationalist” commune who hoarded weapons and were known for disrupting rationalist events before they moved on to murder.

Error: +6 L

Miscategorized: Mohammed Sabry’s molotov attack, which killed an elderly Holocaust survivor. Alex has this down as "Islamism," despite a very clear motive- Sabry was upset about Palestine. When a shooter wasn’t middle eastern, Alex had no issue correctly identifying the bias.

Update: Alex tells me the shooter doesn’t count because “he was mad about Palestine for Muslim reasons.” He then went on to insist that another perp’s religious motives mean he was self-evidently right wing. Make it make sense.

Error: +1 L

Missing: Transgender activist Snehal Ansh Srivastava, who shot and killed a neighbor for objecting to his public blm and Palestine related graffiti-bombing.

Error: +1 L

Attribution/methodology error: Alex counts the Greensboro massacre, wherein a number of rioters were killed during an armed confrontation at an anti-KKK, pro-communist protest.

However, the supposed perpetrators were acquitted three times on various charges. He also misstates the number of perpetrators and victims.

Counting error: the Medina killings. Alex lists a total of six victims, when there were only two.

Error: -4 RW

Missing: Anthony Nephew, the deranged lefty who annihilated his family after Trump won the 2024 election. Four dead, including two children. Nephew left behind a deranged manifesto ranting about Trump, christians, and the Handmaid’s tale.

Update: Alex insists, without evidence, that the killer “also didn’t like democrats.” Not liking the mainstream party is pretty standard for extremists, but this once again underlines Alex's bias, as he assumes the right is a monolith.

Miscategorized: Robert Long, a man who killed eight in a spree targeting massage parlors, is listed as right wing. While Long claimed a sex addiction and was religious, there is zero evidence of political motive. Long expressed a desire to avoid sexual incontinence by killing prostitutes he was frequenting.

Complete bsing.

Update: Alex asserts that Christianity is inherently right wing. That might surprise the forty percent of liberals who consider themselves Christians.

Misclassified: Santino Legan, the Gilroy garlic festival shooter, disingenuously listed as RW. Legan made remarks about the festival attracting "hordes of mestizos and Silicon Valley white twats."

A search of his home revealed extremist material from left and right sources, along with a hit list that included republican and democratic targets. His victims appear to have been random.

Legan is a good exemplar of “Cafeteria extremists,” whose ideology is all over the map and doesn’t slot neatly into a binary classification.

Misclassified: Robert Justus, et al. Marked as a "right wing" "white supremacist" "boogaloo."

This speaks to the incurious nature of Nowrasteh and others who frequently slot boogaloos as RW, despite them being libertarian accelerationists who despise both left and right politics.

Both men were *extremely sympathetic* to blm and believed the movement would lead to the fall of the US government, and while not leftists, they certainly were not right wing white supremacists. Mostly they seemed to think the thing was happening.

Omitted: multiple fatalities linked to 2020 protest violence:

(I won’t list folks murdered by looters.)

Oscar Lee Stewart, murdered by arsonist "protester" Montez Lee in Minneapolis. His body was abandoned in riot rubble for weeks.

Two unidentified protesters pointed guns at a Fedex driver, who inadvertently killed a protester while escaping.

Michael Long of Seattle's chaz/chop occupation, killed teenager Lorenzo Anderson.

An unknown assailant at CHAZ shot and killed 16 year old Antonio Mays. Evidence was destroyed by chaz occupants.

Julian Conley and Jerrion McKinney, occupiers at the Atlanta Wendy's Autonomous Zone encampment shot and killed 8 yr old Secoriea Turner after her family inadvertently approached the ruined restaurant.

The unknown killers of Jessica Doty Whitaker, in an racist attack.

Error: +6 L

Omission: Rodney Hinton Jr, deliberately murdered a traffic control officer with his car after the police shooting death of his son.

Error: +1 L

Omission: the 1995 murder of Michael David Westerman, a Kentucky man who was murdered in front of his wife after being chased by three cars full of black teens incensed by his Confederate flag.

Error: +1 L

Methodology issue: listing for "George A Bush," (Gregory) a mentally ill elderly veteran with a record of domestic abuse who shot a couple at a Kentucky Kroger.

Bush was alleged to have made a racist remark. While I intend to let it stand, Alex admits he deliberately ignored other racist killers and hate crime incidents.

Related omission: the murder of Iryna Zarutska in a racially motivated attack. We will revisit this after the trial.

Misclassified: Matthew Riehl, a mentally ill man who died in a shootout with police in Colorado after killing a deputy responding to a noise complaint. Riehl had a history of psychotic breaks. There is zero evidence of any political motive or premeditation.

Misclassified:

Joseph Andrew Stack, who flew his small airplane into an Austin IRS building, left behind a manifesto that is decidedly left wing in tone and content, including quotes from Karl Marx.

Omission/methodology error: James Fields, Charlottesville car attack killer, unequivocally right. However, politically motivated car attacks and shooting of motorists during 2020 BLM riots are mostly omitted for no clear reason.*

*Update: Alex says Fields drove to the protest. Guess that clears it up, then.

Therefore:

Genove Martin, fatally shot fellow protestor Celeb Reed; he was aiming for a motorist.

Miscategorized: Devon Arthur, the former Atomwaffen leader who embraced Islam and shot his two Nazi roommates, is listed as Islamism.

It's claimed by most outlets he did it because they ridiculed his faith, but Devon maintains he was trying to prevent murders by Nazis intent on building a "Fourth Reich."

I'm familiar with this case after helping with research for a popular publication.

By now, you should be seeing how easy it is for them to massage the numbers.

Actual anti-fascism, though.

Update: According to Alex, Devon was “raving about Islam.” There are no witnesses to the murders, and Devon has described his own momotives.

Omitted: the Waukesha car attacks. Waukesha, Wisconsin resident Darrell Brooks Jr plowed a stolen suv through a crowded holiday parade, killing six. Brooks' apartment was filled with racist materials linking him to black supremacy groups and black sovereign citizens, and his social media was filled with pro-BLM posts and anti-white rhetoric.

Update: Alex says he won’t include it because Brooks was “crazy.” (Brooks, unlike several others listed, was found competent to stand trial.)

Miscategorized: Nicholas Glenn, the black West Philadelphia rampage shooter, is listed as "Islamism." Glenn left behind a largely incoherent letter expressing a hatred of police. Police denied a religious motive and I have found zero evidence he was Muslim.

Update: Alex blames unspecified right wing twitter users, admitting he relied on social media rumors.

Miscategorized/methodology error: Robert Louis Dear, a mentally ill anti-abortion crusader who killed three in a mass shooting, was found incompetent to stand trial due to suffering from schizophrenic delusions. He currently resides in a mental facility.

Miscategorized: Jerad and Amanda Miller. I’ve written about these two, having taken a thorough look at their socials the day they shot five people in an anti-government and anti-police spree killing. Most outlets tick the "right wing" box due to the anti-government intent.

The Millers were kooks- they were anti-government, and their facebook pages were overflowing with memes: occupy wall street, police brutality, illuminati, chemtrails, anti-racist messaging. Not remotely "right wing."

Miscategorized: Elliot Rodger, the incel mass murderer: zero evidence of any motive outside of hatred of women.

Sorry, Alex, but misogyny is not a political motive, and incels are singularly focused on one issue.

Miscategorized: Paul Ciancia, who carried out a mass shooting attempt at LAX, believed the TSA were violating the Constitution.

There is no evidence Ciancia had conservative beliefs, and he is slotted right due to referring to himself as a patriot in an unreleased note found by police, wherein he stated he wanted to kill “TSA and pigs.”

Omitted: The 2023 murder of Dr. Michael John Mammone by Vanroy Evan Smith. Smith targeted Mammone for being white, hitting him with his vehicle while Mammone was riding his bike. As the victim lay helpless, Smith stabbed him repeatedly while hurling racial slurs.

Omitted: The election night ice-axe murder of 67-yr old Timothy Burke by his daughter Corey Burke, wife of transgender activist Samantha Allen, was infuriated by her father's support of Donald Trump.

Miscategorized/methodology error: Chanel Skains, et al. Tough one. Several defendants, one of whom was a sovereign citizen. When deputies tried to apprehend one of the trailer park denizens at a jobsite on a drug warrant, all hell broke loose, and two deputies were killed. Alex has woven several perps from two entirely separate incidents along with witnesses, so I may need to revisit the totals later. Oof.

In any case, while the sovereign citizen crap very likely played a part in this family’s issues, the motive here appears to have been avoiding jail. The shooter who kicked off the fracas was found out incompetent to stand trial due to being a paranoid schizophrenic.

No evidence whatsoever of a political motive for the killings, and no obvious premeditation.

Miscategorized: FEAR militia, my favorite bs act. I’ve written about this one before:

Much of the confusion likely comes from reporters associating the word “militia” with the right.

Miscategorized/methodology error: Richard Poplawski, who opened fire on police responding to a domestic dispute over dog pee. Poplawski’s mother contacted police after an argument over dog mess turned violent.

Poplawski had written antisemitic comments online, leading to this being categorized as "right wing."

Further, in a statement to me, Nowrasteh claims that some left-oriented killings were ignored due to lack of premeditation, however, he includes numerous cases similar to this one, including Faul et al. In another conversation, he derides me for not reading his methodology.

Sigh.

Update: Alex claims, without evidence, that the case was a planned ambush. There is no evidence of this.

Category/methodology error: Scott Woodring, et al. Shot a deputy during an attempt to serve a warrant for underage solicitation. Woodring’s personal beliefs seem unrelated, and such are not counted in similar cases involving left-leaning people.

Methodology error: the bizarre inclusion of several incidents about which no motive is known, including the 2001 anthrax attacks. Political classification requires political motive. Weird.

Category/methodology error: The Barefoots, as noted above.

Another "politically motivated" murder where one trailer park dipshit killed his wife during a contentious breakup.

I'll be honest, I'm confused here. They also killed another member of their own group. Alex has them down for three, with his usual fractions, complicated by his decision to list every 9/11 perp individually in between.

Miscategorized: Russell Eugene Weston, killed two Capitol police officers in 1997.

Weston is a paranoid schizophrenic who was found incompetent to stand trial. He was institutionalized.

Other than vague references to "anti government" sentiment related to his belief he was being spied upon by the cia, his motives are not known. One of very many examples where RW animus is assumed without evidence.

Methodology error: Lee/Keyhoe, et al. Aryan prison gang twits who killed one of their own for urinating in a chair and then robbed a white gun dealer, brutally killing his family. As we do not count murders by others in this fashion, there is no more reason to include these than any other gang crimes.

Miscategorized: Eduardo Arocena, a Cuban anti-castro killing, is included (with other Cuban factionalist crimes) Other crimes in the database involving foreign nationals and foreign politics receive the proper tag, but these do not.

Update: Alex argues to me that “anti communism" is right wing, then insists a CCP-affiliated mass shooter just “really hated Taiwan.”

A post on Instagram the day of the shooting stated “They won’t listen to words or protests, let’s see if they hear this.”

Kelley was a notoriously violent domestic abuser who joined the terminally-online atheist movement. His social media was filled with atheist memes, and his attack on a church attended by estranged family members is one of the highest fatality mass shootings in us history.

Hawkins claimed his crimes were inspired by his fathers advice that white men could be “punished” by “raping their women.”

Omitted: The deadly 1980 Miami riots. Sparked by the beating death of a black man by police, the riots lasted four days and caused untold damage.

Among the dead:

Three white men returning from a fishing trip were dragged from their car and beaten to death by a mob.

A butcher returning from work was attacked in his car by a rock-hurling crowd. After the driver’s car was disabled, rioters set his car on fire, killing him.

Another man died after being beaten by the same stone-throwers.

There’s also a real dearth of detail, so some are going to be missed. Also many, many unsolved cases.

Howard Epstein, 45 yr old white man, was dragged from his car by a mob, beaten and shot.

Mathew Haines, 32, dragged from his motorcycle and shot in the head by a mob while on his way to assist a black friend with her car.

Omitted: Charles Lee “Cookie” Thornton, who massacred six people at a Kirkwood, Missouri city council meeting. Thornton's motive was revenge against whites on the council he had railed against for years, believing they were exploiting black residents of Meacham Park.

Omitted: Update: Corey Cobb-Bey, aka Coremour Bey, black nationalist and anti-police extremist, executed officer Darron Burks last August in Dallas.

Omitted: Elroy Chester, a serial killer and rapist who confessed to five home-invasion murders, several attempted murders, and numerous sexual assaults in Texas between 1997-8. Among the victims was a 10-yr old girl he sodomized in a closet. Chester blamed his crimes on his mental state, claiming to have been “out of his mind” with “hatred for white people.

Omitted: The 2006 murder of Concetta Russo-Carriero by Philip Grant. Grant, a homeless black man, stabbed Russo-Carriero twice in the chest in a targeted killing in a White Plains, NY shopping mall.

In a statement to police played at his trial, Grant admitted to choosing his victim because she was white: “As long as she had blond hair and blue eyes, she had to die…I have no remorse whatsoever because she was white.”

Omitted: Brian Gene Nichols, a black Identarian, killed a judge, a court reporter, a sherrif’s deputy, and an ICE agent in a bid to escape prison for the rape of his former girlfriend. Nichols believed he was falsely accused and that the trial was being conducted by racists.

In letters written from prison, Nichols claimed the killings were a “message” against “systematic slavery” and that he “felt like a soldier” at the time of the killings.

Omitted: Stanford Douglas Junior, who stalked William Berkeyheiser, a former coworker, for seven years, killing him outside his Pennsylvania home because he was angry over an allegedly racist joke told in 1998. The two had never met.

Omitted: The killing of Brooklyn police officers Rafael Ramos and Wenjian Liu by Ismaaiyl Abdullah Brinsley, a purported member of the Nuwabian Nation in 2014. Brinsleyshot and wounded his girlfriend, then took aim at the officers from a window after making posts to Instagram announcing his intent to kill police in revenge for the deaths of Michael Brown and Eric Gardner.

Omitted: Over 900 victims, including over 200 children and a California Congressman, by Jim Jones and Terry Layton, et al of the Peoples' Temple.

While the event took place outside the US, The casualties were massive, topped only by the 9/11 attacks, and the victims and perpetrators were all American.

The event was decidedly political.

The People’s Temple were overtly leftist, preaching communism and racial justice, which Jones called "apostolic socialism." The cult participated in numerous overtly Leftist political activities and received plaudits and payments from California Democrats- Mayor Moscone even appointed Jones head of the SF Housing Authority Commission. Jones was also close to Rosalynn Carter and other prominent Democrats, including Saint Harvey Milk, who stymied the efforts of citizens attempting to retrieve family members from the cult by appealing directly to the Carters.

Eventually, the cult, fearing FBI attention, fled to Guyana, setting in motion a chain of events that would leave close to a thousand dead. By the time of the murders, Jones had renounced religion and the cult had become wholly political. Their assets were donated to the Soviet Union.

Nowrasteh disingenuously ignores the incident.

Omitted: The murder of pro-Israel protester Paul Kessler by anti-Israel activist Loay Alnaji in 2023. Kessler was shoved during an altercation instigated by Alnaji, hit his head, and died.
